The Great Minnesota Get Together

I started this post, planning to post it over the weekend but then that pesky strep throat got in the way!

On my trip to Minnesota, aside from getting my wedding dress, the State Fair was the main attraction!  Mom picked up Grandma Nancy and came to meet Molly and I at the University of Minnesota.  We caught the free shuttle bus from there over to the fair grounds. Naturally we started the day out with breakfast.  Tom Thumb Mini Donuts!

Me with Mini DonutsAfter that we wandered through the Horticulture building.  They have all sorts of interesting things in there.  There was a wing about apples and wineries while another wing had all the seed art, while another had all the awards for biggest of each vegetable.  Of course the biggest tomato was called Zac! I had to send him a picture telling him it was nice that he jointed us at the fair.

After the Horticulture building we headed off for the U of M building, where I got to see a real human brain and spinal cord!  We had some lunch too foot long hot dogs for GN and I and pronto pups for Mom and Molly.  It was pretty hot out so we went to get some shade and see if there was anything awesome to buy in the Grandstand.  Molly and I ended up getting free massages too!

We’d cooled off enough so it was back outside to catch the parade!  We even saw Princess Kay of the Milky Way on her float.  Standing in the direct sunlight made us thirsty so we headed over to the Leine Lodge for a beer, benches to sit on and live music.

After we’d cooled off again it was time to get french fries and walk around some more to see if there was anything we’d missed

We made our way to the dairy bar to see the butter heads being carved and get a malt for the ride home, then it was back to the bus stop.

Kansas City BBQ

We are attending a wedding in Kansas City this weekend of a friend of ours from high school.  The whole trip worked out extremely well as I was already coming out to Topeka for work, so I could just stay through the weekend.  Zac was able to come in earlier which saved on the flight and also got to spend some time with the groom yesterday.

I worked a half day at the office and then we made the trip from Topeka to Kansas City.  We arrived at the hotel around one in the afternoon and headed out for a late lunch and to explore the area.

KC Skyline

We are staying at a Courtyard Marriott and the room has a great view of downtown.  We’re sharing it with another friend so with 3 people in the room it’s a bit of a mess already!

After lunch, we headed into downtown Kansas City.  We wandered around a bit and visited to the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

ShootingAfter the Hall of Fame we rushed over to make the last tour of the day at Boulevard Brewery.  The tour was about 45 minutes and afterwards we got to try four beers of our choice.  I tried the Test Nelson, 80 Acre Wheat, Dry Stout and Tank 7.

For dinner, we went to get some authentic Kansas City BBQ at Jack Stack.  We split the Roundup combo.  It had ribs, sliced pork, sliced beef, sliced ham and three sides.  So much food! We left stuffed with deliciousness.

Off to bed, we’ve got a wedding to go to tomorrow!

Tuesday In Topeka

I’m in Topeka, Kansas for work this week.  Since March I’ve been coming here 2 weeks per month.

If you’ve never been to Kansas, when you come you’ll see a lot of this:

KansasLots of farmland, some cows and a ton of support for the two major universities here!

As this is my 6th trip out here, I’ve tried to expand my restaurant picks and tonight tried a new place.  I met two co-workers at Blind Tiger Brewery.  I had their Raspberry Wheat beer and the Texas Roadrunner plate.  The beer was the perfect amount of sweetness, sometimes fruit beers are too sweet for my liking.  The Texas Roadrunner was a recommendation by one of them and was so delicious.  It consisted of chicken topped with brisket topped with buffalo sauce and melted cheese.  It sounds like such an odd combination but it totally works.  Sides were black beans and rice. If you like wheat beers Boulevard Wheat is another discovery I’ve made on my trips here.

With all this eating out I’ve been doing lately I really need to get back into a consistent workout routine!  Plan of attack to come.

What is your favorite wheat beer?

What do you do to get yourself back on track with workouts?
