The Great Minnesota Get Together

I started this post, planning to post it over the weekend but then that pesky strep throat got in the way!

On my trip to Minnesota, aside from getting my wedding dress, the State Fair was the main attraction!  Mom picked up Grandma Nancy and came to meet Molly and I at the University of Minnesota.  We caught the free shuttle bus from there over to the fair grounds. Naturally we started the day out with breakfast.  Tom Thumb Mini Donuts!

Me with Mini DonutsAfter that we wandered through the Horticulture building.  They have all sorts of interesting things in there.  There was a wing about apples and wineries while another wing had all the seed art, while another had all the awards for biggest of each vegetable.  Of course the biggest tomato was called Zac! I had to send him a picture telling him it was nice that he jointed us at the fair.

After the Horticulture building we headed off for the U of M building, where I got to see a real human brain and spinal cord!  We had some lunch too foot long hot dogs for GN and I and pronto pups for Mom and Molly.  It was pretty hot out so we went to get some shade and see if there was anything awesome to buy in the Grandstand.  Molly and I ended up getting free massages too!

We’d cooled off enough so it was back outside to catch the parade!  We even saw Princess Kay of the Milky Way on her float.  Standing in the direct sunlight made us thirsty so we headed over to the Leine Lodge for a beer, benches to sit on and live music.

After we’d cooled off again it was time to get french fries and walk around some more to see if there was anything we’d missed

We made our way to the dairy bar to see the butter heads being carved and get a malt for the ride home, then it was back to the bus stop.

Surprise Visit Weekend

Way back in March my mom and I planned a surprise for my sister and dad. I would come home to Connecticut for Memorial Day weekend to surprise them.  My sister goes to school in Minnesota and was only home for a week in between the end of the semester and her internship. Since we weren’t telling her we figured why not keep it a secret from dad too.

Although it went a bit differently than planned, the surprise still worked! My flight was supposed to leave Reagan at 10:05 pm, but with all the crazy thunderstorms going on, the departure board looked like this:

Airport DelaysMy 10:05 flight was delayed to 10:50, then 11:05, back to 10:50 then 11:20. Once we actually got on the plane, air traffic control put a hold on all flights going the direction we were due to some isolated storms. We finally took off around 12:30 am, flew faster than normal and landed in Hartford at 1:15 am.  Surprisingly it wasn’t as bumpy of a ride as I was expecting but I still felt much better being on the ground! By the time I got to my parent’s house it was 2 in the morning so everyone was asleep. The surprise waited until morning when they woke up. Both of them had no idea I was coming and my sister even had a few tears, especially when I told her I’d made a few appointments for us to go shopping for wedding dresses.

Other than the rainy weather on Saturday and Sunday, it was a nice to spend the weekend at home and see my family and dog. I even got some exercise in. Mom, Molly and I went to yoga on Saturday morning and Monday morning at The Yoga Shop.
