Charlottesville Day Trip

On Saturday Zac and I took a day trip down to Charlottesville, VA.  From our place, it was just over two hours to get there.

First stop was University of Virginia for a football game!

Unfortunately the Wahoos were not victorious over Ball State.  I enjoyed picking up the cheers though,  Who doesn’t love yelling out “Go Wahoos!”

After the game we headed out to Jefferson Vineyards for a tasting.  The whole Monitcello area is really beautiful and not very far out of town.  Someday I’d like to go back and actually take a tour of the grounds and the house.

I bought a bottle of Petit Verdot to bring home.  Wish I had taken a picture of it in the glass, the color was gorgeous!

After the winery, we made our way to historic downtown.  The whole main road has been closed off and everything is pedestrian friendly.  There are a bunch of shops and restaurants.  We settled on Citizen Burger for dinner.  They have lots of local ingredients and homemade sauces and buns.  YUM!

Girls Night In

Last night I headed over to my friend Naisha’s apartment for a wine and cheese party.  We were told to bring a bottle of wine, a cheese to go with it and if we wanted, a dish to share.

I decided to bring over Tuscarora Red, one of the bottles I purchased from Rockridge Vineyards at the wine festival earlier this month.  I got a little fancy with my cheese and made caprese skewers with basil from the plant on our balcony.  I made them in advance so all I had to do was drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar over them before I left.

I also made a pasta salad.  I started with a box of original Suddenly Salad and added some additional tri-color rotini, red pepper, green pepper, the rest of the cherry tomatoes, the rest of the mozzarella and some italian dressing.  Simple and quick.

Wine and Cheese Party Spread

There were 8 of us total and we all sampled a few of the wines before settling in to chat and snack with a glass of our favorite.

I’m so happy that the girls I’m meeting down here are all turning out to be such great friends.

Vintage Virginia Wine Festival

On Sunday I went to the Vintage Virginia Wine Festival with three friends.  The festival was out at Bull Run Park out in Centerville, Virginia about 45 minutes away from home.

Over 30 wineries from all over Virginia were there.  You were given a wristband and a glass when you walked in. Everything was spread out in the field and under tents.  There were also additional vendors selling things like jewelry, clothes and wine accessories as well as a row of food trucks.

Vintage VirginiaWe made it to just under half of the wineries.  The festival was spread out across the whole day, we got there around noon and it ended at five.  There were some famous names and some funny ones.

WineriesThe weather was pretty much perfect for a day outside.  Warm, but with some clouds so the sun wasn’t beating down on you.  I definitely made sure to wear sunscreen anyway!  Here we are at The Williamsburg Winery.

All at the festivalWilliamsburg was one of my favorite wineries of the day.  I ended up coming home with six bottles of wine from three different vineyards.  Most of the vineyards were running specials on select wines or offered discounts for more than three bottles purchased so I didn’t pay more than 15 dollars for any of them.

Happy Friday everyone!  Here are five things I’m looking forward to this weekend!

2) The pool will be the perfect place to read these

3) Planting some herbs on the balcony

4) Date Night on Saturday at Zaika

5) Vintage Virginia Wine Festival on Sunday

What are your weekend plans?

What I Ate Wednesday

This week is really flying by for me.  I can’t believe it is already Wednesday! Only 2 more days of work until some really nice weekend weather.

As I’ve started to record what I eat, when you know you’re posting pictures of what you ate for all of the interwebs to see, it makes you want to make better choices.  If that is going to help me eat a bit healthier, I’m going with it!  Without further ado, my eats for today.

Breakfast: blueberry oat cake and coffee with milk and sugar

I baked the cake last night with the blueberries that were starting to go soft.  Mine totally looks the same as the Martha Stewart Living recipe right?

Lunch: grilled buffalo chicken sandwich on wheat from Potbelly.  Toppings included hot sauce, lettuce, tomato and blue cheese.  Enjoyed with a side of watermelon and seltzer.
